Baby Boomers - More Interested in “Being” than “Becoming”

Baby Boomers have always enjoyed a privileged role in society, and they’re used to being catered to by people in their sphere of influence - whether the others were parents, parents, or vendors and advertisers.  Having started life in wealthy post-World War II nuclear families, and having worked for many years to build their own private economic security, they have already climbed the initial levels of Maslow’s needs Hierarchy : physiological wishes, safety wants and plenty of their social desires and self-esteem wants.  in doing so, many Boomers devoted several years working in corporate America where they needed to subjugate their true deep-seated passions to the day-to-day wants of the business world and the financial wishes of their young families.

Subsequently, as they approach retirement, they need to make up for any opportunities that they surrendered during their employments. They now have different motivations than they did during their younger years.  As increasing numbers of seniors move into retirement, they are most targeted on meeting their self-actualization wishes.  They are interested in ‘being’ who they are, and developing (or expressing) their full potential in life.  In other words, they’re essentially interested in self-actualization.

this implies that they are more intrinsically inspired than externally motivated.  They’re self-directed.  They will readily undertake activities, and make selections, that many would have evaded in their youth because of what others might say.  Many of the things that would have bothered them - or perhaps stopped them - in earlier years, do not even register a trace on the radar screen anymore.  They have mellowed, and they’re happily pursuing the path to inner peace.

For many seniors, that path to personal growth may mean beginning their own business, going back to faculty to get a complicated degree, globe running around the world, or following a selection of other artistic or cultural passions.  Smart advertisers will see that Boomers are still an incredible force in the economy, with giant purchasing power, and will tailor their service and goods - as well as their advertisements and marketing programs, their internet sites, and their social media to the Boomers generational cohort in techniques that help them achieve their goals, save them time, and/or provide them with fascinating life experiences.
